When the ceramic cartridges get plugged with dirt, they can be easily removed from the unit by unscrewing wing nuts that hold it in place. They can then be cleaned by scrubbing the surface of the cartridge using a scrub pad (included with unit). A cartridge gauge (also included) is used after every cleaning to check whether the cartridge diameter is within safe limits. When the gauge diameter equals or exceeds the diameter of the cartridge, the cartridges need replacement. Gravity units comprise of two separate water containers, one for the untreated water and the other for safe drinking water. Steel Gravity Water Filter

When disasters strike, often electricity is disrupted creating further challenges for supplying safe drinking water. Worldover, through aid agencies and NGOs, Rainfresh gravity water filter systems have been providing safe drinking water from virtually any water source (lake, river, pond, stream, well etc) without the use of pumps or electricity.

These stainless steel gravity filters utilize Rainfresh’s unique ceramic filtration technology to trap >99.99999% pathogenic bacteria (e.g. E. coli) and protozoan cysts (e.g. Cryptosporidium & Giardia) in addition to reducing sediment and suspended matter down to 0.3 micronabsolute (1 micron = 1/1000 mm).

The gravity filter system has two stainless steel containers, one on top of the other. Four ceramic cartridges are housed in the top container which is filled with untreated water. Water slowly passes through the ceramic cartridges where bacteria, cyst and other microbes are retained and killed. Safe water collects in the bottom container under gravity at a rate of up to 2.6 litres per hour.
